EFOSC2 Setup night checklist

Please print out this form and go through the checklist. The filled checklist plus the backuped data (on CD preferably) and nightlog should be passed on to the instrument scientist for monitoring purpose.

The instrument setup request should be sent at least the night before the setup night so that the changes can be made in the lab already, or during the afternoon of the setup night. The instrument should be setup so that the configurations of the forthcoming observing runs can be tested.

Task OB to execute Done? Category Comment
Take biases in all modes Biases_x10_all_modes.obx   C
Check biases for structures     C
Compare biase levels and noise with normal values     C
Take HeAr arcs for mounted grisms Spec_Arcs_1as.obx   C Skip unmounted grisms
Check grisms are labelled correctly     C For each grism, check the HeAr correspond to diagram on web.
Check grisms are mounted correctly     C Red should be up
Check HeAr lamps     C Are the line intensities reasonable?
Spectroscopic dome flats 1 arcsec slit all grisms Spec_FF_Dome_1as.obx   C Skip unounted grisms.
If not possilble, take internal flats with the quartz lamp.
Change the starplate if 1 arcsec slit is not mounted.
Spectroscopic flats for all mounted slits, one grism     C Take one flat (internal or external) for each mounted slit.
Check spectroscopic flats     C Check for the quality of all mounted slits.
Check identity of special filters     N If some special filters are mounted, make sure of their real filter ID. This is especially the case if the filter was left in the instrument from the last observing run. Do not rely solely on the setup log.
Consider removal of unnecessary filters for the observing run.
Imaging dome flats Imaging_FF_dome.obx   C Take for all mounted filters
Imaging sky flats     D Usually EFOSC is not ready early enough for these
Check CCD      C Check carefully a dome flat image to see if the CCD is working properly. Note that sometimes a problem with the CCD is only visible in the flat and not in the bias.
Check lightpath     Check for vignetting
Check quality of filters     N Monitor quality of mounted filters, from star images or from flats. Check for internal reflections for narrow band filters.
Check all observing templates and calibration templates     N Make OBs on all observing modes and execute to see if they execute without problems.
Check telescope pointing     C
Check image quality     C Are focused images round?
Check focusing     C Can telescope focus?
Focus with focus wedge     C Note down encoder units
Focus with focus sequence     C Compare encoder units for focus wedge to focus sequence. If they are very different, the focus wedge must be realigned.
Photometric standards at different airmasses Imaging_Std_XXXX.obx   N Preferably a range of standards between airmass of 1 and 2.
Not necessary if non-photometric, but you may want to observe a standard field to check the pointing, focusing and image quality.
Spectrophotometric standard(s)     N Take for all grisms with 5 arcsec slit, parallactic angle. One standard is enough per grism.
Check alignment of slit     C If star spectrum is tilted, slit must be realigned
Check MOS mask design with xm on wlsmos     O Critical if observer will be doing MOS observations.
Check creation of.mask and.msk files.
Check MOS punch machine online and that the punch program is running on mos@w3p6ins     O Critical if observer will be doing MOS observations.
Check MOS punch can punch     O Critical if observer will be doing MOS observations.
Punch a plate and check the slits correspond to the design.
Check punch head quality     O Critical if observer will be doing MOS observations.
Inspect quality of punched slits.
Are there enough blank MOS masks?     O
i band fringes     O A series of 10 minute i band images with jitter
Bad pixel mask     O domeflats with different mean levels.
Differential trackking     O
Differential guiding     O
Astrometric field     O For working out pixel size and chip orientation
Polarimetric mode     O Critical if this observer is going to do polarimetry.
Check special setup     C Special observing modes and procedures of visiting astronomer should be tested
Check data subscriber + delivery     C Is data subscriber working properly?
Is data sent to w3p6off and w3p6drl?
Check disk spaces     C Is there enough room on w3p6off and w3p6drl?
Check consumables     D Is there enough CDs, DAT tapes, paper?
