Chapter 8 - Mirror 1 Active Optics

8.1 INTRODUCTION

During the image analysis of M1 with the ANTARES system, the M1 control electronics measure the actual load on each load cell. The VME asks the Phillips Data Logger (refer to Section 8.2) to read each load cell sequentially and get the results back via an RS232 line.

An average is made over three measurements. The requested load is received via Ethernet on the VME. The difference (actual/requested) is converted in time during which a velocity-controlled motor will move a counter weight in the appropriate support. Thus the motors are on/ off controlled. The time for one correction cycle is:

If a residual error remains after the first correction, a new iteration is done (measure load cells and motor correction). The motors are controlled in parallel mode.

The data logger contains the offset calibration value for all load cells. A battery provides one year safe memory.

To remove measurement drifts as well as errors due to the tilt of the telescope (the load cells are sensitive to their own weight), a reference channel has been implemented. Its value is measured and subtracted from all other channels.

This is load cell No. 79 (channel 156) mounted on the rear of the data logger.

8.1.1 Watchdog

The total weight of the mirror M1 is supported by 75 active supports and 3 fixed supports.

Note: At present, due to unexpected friction introduced by lateral support, the fixed supports are also driven by motors in order to adjust their load according to altitude angle.

In the normal situation, the nominal load on these fixed supports (7, 29 and 50) should be approximately 800Nm. If for some reason all active supports decrease their force, the difference is applied to the fixed supports. This load could increase to 2 tonnes and destroy the load cells. The software checks that no overload is present every 10 seconds. The limits are: 130Kg maximum and 40Kg minimum.

If the load is within these values, a one second pulse activates the enable for the motor power supply.

8.2 DATA LOGGER

8.2.1 Data Logger Input Blocks

The load cells are, after modification, connected in DC mode to the input blocks. The supply distribution is made on the wiring side.:

The load cells are connected at even channels to keep the numbering the same as previously. In addition, the supply lines are measured at channels 1 and 3.

See the Data Logger Input Block diagrams detailed in the Drawing List.

8.2.3 Programming

The following list sets the parameters that have to be loaded into the data logger after CPU exchange or battery failure.

One hundred and sixty channels are available. Load cells are connected to even channels 000 to 156. Excitation voltage is measured at channels 001 and 003.

Tha channel corresponding to a load cell number nn is: channel = (nn*2) - 2

Channel 158 is the motor current channel; any of the 75 motors can be measured.

To program the data logger:

Programming Commands

Note: All the following commands must be followed by "ENTER"

Same INTVL 1 line i to ii

LIKE STEP j TO jj, but line 1 = "4" (4 V DC VOLT)

LIKE STEP j TO jj

LIKE STEP j TO jj, BUT STEP k TO kk AS FOLLOWS

Measuring the load cell in DC voltage mode makes the zero offset calibration unnecessary.

The sensitivity is 1mV/V at full scale (200Kg).

Excitation voltage is 5V.

The output is 5mV for 200Kg which gives 1microV = 40 grammes.

Set the data logger in MEASURE MODE.

O - OPERMODE

0 = MEASURE

D0 - DIALOGUE OFF

Disconnect the terminal from the data logger and replace it by the VME serial connection.

The data logger is ready for operation with the VME.
