During May 2004 the CES saw a major change. With the move of the Cassegrain end of the fiber to
the HARPS-CES Fiber Adapter (HCFA), the CES is now equipped with an Atmospheric Dispersion
Correcter and an iodine cell. Furthermore, the very time-efficient HARPS Calibration Unit (HCU)
significantly reduces overheads e.g. when taking ThAr exposures.
Having CES and HARPS in the same adapter significantly diminishes the time overhead when changing
from one instrument to the other. In fact, the complete change including software changes takes less
than 1 minute! However, the possibility of changing instrument during the night is
so far not offered.
Due to these changes, the observing templates were rewritten without backward
compatibility. This means that OB's from P73 and earlier will not work anymore. It also means that
the FITS headers have changed to include new information from the HCFA and from the HCU.
Also the file names have changed from the old style like "CES_Obs.23.fits" to the ESO standard
like "CES_hcfa_obs_all_0023.fits".
Below is an example of the new and old header for comparison. The main differences are:
- All INS keywords of the old header are now INS1 keywords, but otherwise the same.
- The keywords of the HCFA and HCU are included as INS2 keywords.
