CES Data Backup
and
Disk Space Management

ESO 360 daily backup is done in a DAT tape every morning by the day operator. All the CES*.fits in the $INS_ROOT/SYSTEM/DETDATA will be saved on on tape and a file list printout archived in a folder. DAT tapes and files list folters must be in one of the 3th team office cabinet assigned to this purpose.

Daily Backup Procedure

  1. Take both the current file list folder and a new DAT tape from the Daily fbackup and Consumable Items Storage(3th floor team office).
  2. Go to the small WS room and in the w3p6ces and under the ces account use any xterm window to perfom the backup procedures.
  3. If a DAT tape is already installed do:
    • Write down on the tape labels:
      CES_yyyymmdd (beggining of the night)
      "dd backup"
      "Block size 2880"
    • Then type mt -t /dev/rmt/0mn offl and remove the tape.
    • To protect from erasure, slide the white tab open.
    • Stick the labels on the tape and later on give the DAT tape to the support Astronomer.
  4. Install the new DAT tape and wait until the unit is ready (led should not be blinking)
    Type cesopsDaily_fbackup
  5. Write down on the tape labels:
    CES_yyyymmdd (beggining of the night)
    "fbackup"
    "Number of files="
  6. Backup script will finish with a list print out (Tape header, files list and logfiles list) in the lpt3p6 and with the DAT unit offline (tape out).
All the CES*.fits files in the /vlt/insroot/SYSTEM/DETDATA will be moved to the subdirectory yyyy-mm-dd (biggining of the night date) at the end of the process.
  7. Remove the DAT tape.
  8. To protect from erasure, slide the white tab open.
  9. Stick the labels on the tape. Then file the print-out in the lists folder and leave them in the Daily fbackup and Consumable Items Storage(3th floor team office).

Night by Night Observer Backup

Observer should do their own backup using either the automatic data saving running in background or manual procedure via tar command every night.
The automatic data saving is a tcl script created by F. Patat writing in dat at end of each CCD readout and creating the observing log files to be given to the Observers.

Disk Space Management

Directories older than three nights and already saved on CD by the DATA FLOW SYSTEM administrators will be deleted either in agreement with the Observer during his/her run or when a new Observer is caming by the day operators.
