ABOUT LA SILLA UNIVERSITY

La Silla University (LSU) is an in-house institution devoted to find ways of imbedding learning in a range of meaningful contexts where ESO staff members can learn to use their knowledge and skills creatively, to make an impact on the world around them.

A key challenge is to shift the focus from what people should know onto what they should be able to do with their knowledge. Hence, its main mission points to a permanent training of our staff (the students), mainly in areas connected to their specific fields of work, and where these fields have evolved, but also in areas that may prove complementary to enable them to apply their enhanced knowledge efficiently and creatively in their daily activities.

Our lecturers are experienced professionals in their respective subjects, fully aware of the day-to-day technological evolution. On the other hand, students are expected to seriously engage in their compromise to learn new skills and apply them in their work, their acquisition of these new learning being duly evaluated at the end of each course.

High-level experts in different fields, are invited to the observatory so as to expose on subjects that may contribute to a more comprehensive curriculum.

In 2004 a complete Re-engineering Plan was carried out. As part of it, a complete training program was organized; an e-Learning Platform named e-LSU was created from which all class materials (agenda, contents, support documentation, exam questions) can be retrieved. Also, a committee was created which is currently integrated by 5 people, plus some other staff members who have joined the Culture and Sports subcommittees. At present, this new LSU is up and running with an intensive academic curriculum.
