The advantage of this tool for service mode observations is obvious. The tool weas developed on Paranal by Andreas Jaunsen and the software team. Action : The package should be porperly implemented. Action Log : 2/1/2004 11:36:47 AM ebarrios Properly implemented for me is to be included in the M2 proyect as it was requested sometime ago. Yes is not readily to any user because is not fully automatic. I´ll explain here what are the current procedure and tools used for measurements. Method: The idea is to take intra/extra focal images using the combination of center field mirror (CFM), center field focus function (CFF) and the image technical CCD (imgTEC). As the intra/extra focal images have to be taken with the same focal distance, telescope focus have to be done with the center field focus function set to 30000 enc-units. Then for intra/extra focal images, it has to be moved to 0 and 60000 enc-units. Image Analysis is done by a remote application currently installed on optics@kila:$HOME/curvature Procedure: 1.- On TCS control panel select the image quality catalog and do a Telescope Preset around Zenith (check not hatch viggneting). Stars magnitud have to be bigger than 12 to avoid pupil saturation after 30sec. exposure without neutral density(ND). Using the current ND installed in the curvature sensing carriage (CVS), stars magnitud bigger than 8 will be ok. 2.- Open a xterm on cam@w3p6tcs and type e3p6opsIqMes. This scrip will open a panel, logFile xterm and midas console to run the images sequence and its analysis. From panel user can do: - define both the imgTCCD and Image Analysis - Start imgTCCD infinite loop - Do imgTCCD setup - Start the image sequence - Run the image batch analysis - Run image analysis software for manual checks - Print results - See the imgTCCD status and the image analysis results Buttons Telescope focus and M2 correction don´t have an associated action yet 3.- Move Center Field Mirror (CFM) in 4.- Move Center Field Focus (CFF) to 30000 enc-units 5.- Do Telescope focus sequence (Moving M2). This is a manual procedure to be optimized because could take easily 15 minutes. Focus function is not precise enouht to just set M2 without check. The expectation with the new M2 is to have a better focus and collimation function modeling. To avoid this step, it was suggested by Alan to move CFF to 0 enc-units and move M2 until the pupil reach the reference diameter. But as the M2 movement also move the pupil image, automatic procedure is not an easy cake, for the moment this is also a manual procedure. 6.- On e3p6opsIqMes panel press StartSeq button. This procedure do the following: - check and moves center field mirror in - moves center field focus function - take by each CFF posistion a 30sec. exposure of pupil, do 90" telescope offset to take a 30sec. exposure of skybackground, do the skybackground substraction and send it to optics@kila:$HOME/curvature/data/eso_3m60_f8/yy_mm_dd 7.- On e3p6opsIqMes press Run EFbatch button to get the IQ results. If the results are not in the range, e.i. Total IQ < 0.5" this means either the M2 was re-installed in a wrong position or collimations screws were moved or M1 moves. M1 reset is the only action that can be done on-spot. M2 corrections need one morning to re-install it + one night for measurement and collimation corrections, so two setup nights after TIMMI2 run are a must. I´m still around for questioning Thanks 2/10/2004 9:05:29 AM ikastine The image analysis panels and scripts were copied to e3p6gui module. Some minor changes were made to IA sequence. After talking with Alain, it is clear that focusing of telescope is the main time consuming task of IA sequence. The focus circle shall be implemented to E3P6 RTD. With this circle user can fast check if telescope is at focus or not. This is not totally automatic operation due user interaction is needed, but will save time 10-15 min. Also Alain asked that long time statistics are saved to log file. He will send email to me defining those. The EF program can be problem. Currently it runs at kila and we have only installation disks to linux. So if something happens to kila or network, IA cannot be executed. To make things evem worst the company which made EF program has disappeared, so we will have no support for that program. I think we should see possibility to port image analysis EF part to midas procedures. Alain knows theory behing, but we do not know midas programming, so somebody (Emilio?) at SCI should do this. 2/10/2004 3:20:11 PM gandreon The point is limited in scope to the provision of a command for taking a sequence of images. The rest will be delt in the Image Analysis project later this year. 2/23/2004 9:35:30 AM ikastine The SW is ready to test. I shall make premilinary tests 15 of March if (Efos setup night) sciop gives time to me. Possible comissioning of software can be 28 of Abril (Efos setup night) or 12-14 of May (Harps setup nights). So I request to move deadline at end of May. If it possible, Alain should be here during comissioning due he will be one of major users of system. Additonal note about EF-program: I could not install EF program to redhat 7.3 linux, so we have only binaries at kila. 3/26/2004 8:39:54 AM gandreon GIH:To be tested by E.Barrios 4/20/2004 4:42:52 PM gandreon To be commissioned the night of 12 May Responsible : Software&Commun.Supp.T. Action Log : 10/12/2004 7:08:20 PM agilliot Dichroic has faint hairlines scratches on the gold coating. This situation is already old and will be solved by a new coating to be done once calibrated the process to reach the required thickness. Some time ago a cover was requested to protect the dichroic when set to the park position. Closer the "diffusing" surface is from the detector and higher will be the background level . 11/9/2004 3:44:07 PM psinclai Waiting for AGi to begin tests with gold coatings. 1/11/2005 8:51:34 AM agilliot Dichroic has been dismounted and thorousghly cleaned The gold layer doesn't show reflection stain or irregularity. The transmission is non uniforme and could be related to the Cr layer underneath. Our small vacuum chamber is not operational and beeing upgraded these days. (too long pumping time, low limit vacuum is incorrect,...) Once operational the new gold layer will be done during the week 17-21 just before the installation date of the 20. if the vacuum chamber is still bad we will mount the cleaned gold dichroic. Chemical product to remove gold has been done and tested successfully 1/18/2005 5:05:43 PM gandreon The Cr layer is damaged and cannot be removed properly. This makes the task impossible. A spare from the other arm side will be used instead. A new one may be ordered if deemed necessary. 1/25/2005 2:57:10 PM gandreon Message from Alain: Summary of interventions finaly the small coating plant has been repaired by L. Gonzales our vacuum specialist. Dichroic reflection at 10 mic towards Timmi and transmission (visible) towards the guiding system Two types of dichroics (symmetrical) for the 2 foci of the F/35 adapter (Timmi and opposite) Only one used for Timmi - Dichroic change blocked - The Dichroic has been dismounted from the timmi adapter. - A thorough cleaning shows only small stain on the gold layer. - after removing the gold layer, the Chromium layer was found damaged with several unadherent marks. (Gold needs Cr layer to be adherent on glass) (see attached images showing line marks) - Cr is very hard to remove from glass (only mechanical) - local polish was done not removing all - Gold coating test shown worse surface condition than early - a second attempt was better but showing surface striaes not acceptable with Timmi - This dichroic type (Timmi side of F/35 Adapter) has no spare - symmetrical type (opposite side) has four item - Timmi field projection over the Dichroic shows the possibility on using the symmetrical type even for Timmi side - this Dichroic type with equivalent Gold thickness is installed - Two of the other spare have gold surface layer with marks and stain - the third one has been used to prepare a new spare unit corresponding to the Timmi side type: - removal of gold layer, no contact on Cr layer to reduce damage - new Cr and gold layer on the reverse surface - Gold surface very nice - Possible limitation for guiding facility !!!! ... two Cr layers, one on each side ! Action : The Feros adapter should be lowered and reflective parts should be blackened. Action Log : 4/16/2004 11:25:37 AM gandreon Mail from J.Pritchard: As you may know (since I discussed this with Alain during March), there is currently a difference by a factor of ~3 between the light arriving at FEROS via the calibration fibres. A simple test of whether the problem is the fibres themselves or the optics at the end of the fibres is to switch the fibres at the Adapter end and make observations with the Calibration Unit end of the fibres connected dierectly to the new UV lamp. It would certainly make sense to make this test at the same time as the adapter is lowered to complete the above action item. I would of course like to be present on La Silla during this test, my next tourno starts 22/04 (i.e. next Thursday) and I am on a "strict" 8-6 tourno basis from then until July. 4/18/2004 8:50:16 AM agilliot Today the WFI instrument will be dismounted for inspection. Concerning the Feros calibration fiber a spare unit will have to be purchased to replace the defective one during the test operation. 4/18/2004 5:52:04 PM agilliot After dismounting WFI we found effectively area within the Feros Adapter and the M1 Cassegrain hole producing straylight illumination. The source is out of the telescope axis with a light beam passing at the M2 baffle edge and reaching the inside part of the M1 cassegrain hole. It is not a direct light. Parts of the Feros adapter (fiber support rod, fiber head translation unit, ...) and Cassegrain hole (three flanges surfaces at the Feros level) produced low stray light polution. Each effect corresponds to grazing reflection on painted metallic surfaces. Tests will be performed thereafter to check the suppression of the parasitic reflections 4/18/2004 6:40:47 PM agilliot Tests results are positive ... Time must be agreed with SCIOP to make the test and eventual change of fibers. 7/4/2004 5:36:10 AM jpritcha We (AGi, EAr & JPr), with assistance from MEC and APi, successfully carried out the intervention today. We were able to increase the flux through the SKY Calibration fibre by approximately 50%. Moreover we are now quite certain that the two calibration fibres have a transmission ratio of ~1.0. The improved throughput of the SKY Calibration fibre is believed to be due to: 1) cleaning of the fibre optic exits at the adapter. 2) Careful alignment of the calibration beams on the fibre apertures. We are certain of the transmission ratio being ~1.0 by comparison of the flux from the Deuterium lamp connected directly to each calibration fibre in turn measured in the TCCD. The estimated 50% increase in transmission of the SKY Calibration fibre is derived by comparing FFs taken before the intervention whose flux ratio between fibres was 1.0 with those taken afterward where the flux ratio is now ~10000/15000 (OBJ/SKY). Moreover the absolute level of the flux in the OBJ fibre is unchanged between before and after indicating that this is a real increase in throughput of the SKY calibration fibre. The previously reported factor of ~4 was traced to mis-alignment of the Sliding Calibration Selection Mirror for the SKYFIB position (which was used for the previous acqusition of the Deuterium test data). The misalignment (enc 50000 instead of enc 60000) accounts for a factor of approx 3, which when coupled with the above 50% (i.e. factor of 1.5) gives approximately the factor of 4. A remaining problem is the alignment of the optics in the calibration unit which focus the calibration light onto the inputs of the calibration fibres. AGi and EAr plan to work on this today (2004/07/04). 7/5/2004 3:13:06 PM agilliot this action can be closed and another open to improve the efficiency input on the calibration fiber . A small adjustment on one of the fiber is required. 7/5/2004 3:54:32 PM jpritcha Yesterday (as noted above) AGi and EAr indeed completed the optics alignmnent, obtaining an almost optimum alignment in terms of relative flux from LAMP1 arriving at the CCD: New ratio is 1.2 compared to previous was 2.4! MUCH better!!!! RSM was then reconfigured for LAMP2 to balance flux ratio, a ration of ~1.0 was achieved. Greater freedom of movement of the position of the fibre inputs must be implemented to allow both fibres to be aligned optimally with the optics. A related problem is the position of the Shutter unit which was found to be in contact with the monting o the optics. A greater range of positioning for this unit must alos be implemented (simply re-machine holes in mounting bracket into slots...). Reassigned to Optics. 8/12/2004 6:12:07 AM jpritcha There seems to be a problem which I would guess is hardware rather than software. I have re-configured the ICS according to the information provided by JAl for the input and output bits (23 & 24 respectively -- see below) but it does not work properly in that I can turn the lamp ON from the ICS control panel, but I can not turn the lamp OFF from the control panel. In fact the only way I could turn it off was to power cycle the LCU, even a reset/reboot without power cycle did not turn it off! Tested OK. Accepted. 3. Tested OK. Accepted. 2. pending: Have coordinated to do this work on Sep 9th with AGi. 9/9/2004 3:40:31 PM agilliot Blue light improved with proper colour filters on blue and red FF lamps The main reduction was originated on ND filters installed since the unit installation on the 1m50 10/12/2004 11:06:57 AM jpritcha The urgency for this AI is now less due to the good work recently done on the Halogen lamps and the alignment of the optics (meaning that the Halogen lamps are now providing significantly improved (and probably accpetable) signal levels). However it is still desirable to get the Deuterium lamp FULLY implemented. In this respect as noted above point 2 is still pending, since we did not work on this on Sep 9th as noted above in order to work instead on improving the Halogen blue flux level. Perhaps this could be worked on during the November 17-21 FEROS ADC technical time if AGi will have some time available during this technical time, for example while MEC are busy with the hardware installation. 10/12/2004 11:08:22 AM jpritcha Just noticed that this AI somehow has Status Completed, which is not correct, it is still pending. Have therefore changed status Assigned. 10/19/2004 2:53:41 PM gandreon To be checked with Director. 10/26/2004 3:34:57 PM gandreon After the conversation with the Director it does not seem that the addition of another optical element is sufficiently justified. Provided that strong scientific drivers are provided, an optical and mechanical design of the addition could be prepared. Although it could be carried out inside this point, for clarity I suggest to consider it closed (since its main aim was to provide independent and monitored control of the Deuterium lamp) and open a new one. This requires the creation of just two ICS database points, one for the FEROS Focus Offset without ADC and the 2nd the the FEROS Focus Offset WITH ADC. 2) MORE SOPHISTICATED: The TCS controls setting the focus, according to values set in TCS database points which could be set by either FEROS or WFI. I think this option is the more desirable one in the long term. The main advantage being that the telescope focus equation would then be centralised rather than being calculated independantly by each instrument. This implementation would require a few database points and a server to control the focus, which would allow for either continuous adjustment of the focus to the current best value (as is currently done for FEROS) or to be set once at the beginning of each observation (as is currently done for WFI). For either solution 1) is required, 2) is then negotiable... Action Log : 8/10/2004 5:11:08 PM gandreon Part 1 considered as action point. Part 2 could be a small project. Action Log : 8/31/2004 9:53:29 PM psinclai Request by PSI: create a shell script "wfinsStartCCDs that combines "wfinsStopTCCDS", "wfinsStopSCCDS", "wfinsStartSCCDS" and "wfinsStartTCCDS" into one single script to be used on normal operations by the TIOs when starting up WFI. In the same way, a shell script "wfinsStopCCDs" that combines "wfinsStopTCCDS" and "wfinsStopSCCDS" is also required. Therefore, the startup for WFI shall be done by: wfinsStartCCDs (for CCDs) wfinsStartUp (for ICS and OS) and shutdown by: wfinsShutDown wfinsStopCCDs The reason for this change is because the camera startup script defined in the Fiera environment, when it is starting a camera but that camera is already running, it will kill the processes first, but in the operation it will kill also the processes of the other camera. So, we have to avoid the possibility of starting a camera that is already running.
