Action : Several instruments (EFOSC, TIMMI, EMMI, SOFI) need the updated Instrument Packages (IPs) to be installed on the VAs user machines (DRL1...) as soon as possible. A "maintenance" plan should be devised to make sure the updated IPs are always installed on these machines. The plan should foresee a three months period for full IP installation: before the beginning of the period and in the middle of each period. Action Log : 8/31/2004 10:11:25 PM psinclai in progress 9/25/2004 2:28:59 PM aschemrl Instrument Packages are aligned when: 1. There is a period change, 2. VLT upgrade, 3. Instrument Upgrade, 4. DFS upgrade as requested by DMD, 5. Special Request made to the lsarchiv@eso.org account as outlined in you own Sciops web page. This AP is applicable to point 5. If you have already established a procedure in your own Sciops web page, I'm not sure why it is not being followed. 10/12/2004 11:39:57 AM jpritcha This AI concerns the defining a procedure and Maintenance Plan for getting updated IPs into the default setups of the DRL user accounts. As far as I know, SciOps is NOT responsible for that. Our IP update procedure gets the IPs as far as one specific repository on epu, namely: http://www.ls.eso.org/lasilla/sciops/esoonly/ip/ Thus the procedure for updating the template DRL accounts and the plan for when to do this needs to specify how to get the IPs from the above into the template setup and when this should be done. At this moment I have just finished updating the above repository with the current IPs for all NINE instruments. As for the procedure documented at http://www.ls.eso.org/lasilla/sciops/esoonly/operations/astro/ip.html, it states that for the offline systems updating... "will be done automatically by P2PP, as soon as the new IP is included in the databse in Gaching" but as I understand it we want the IPs currently in use at the telescopes available on the offline DRLs since the IPs in the garching database are not necessarily always the ones in use at the telescope. i.e. The procedure is out of date (in this respect and several others) and will be updated when I return from Science Leave in November). So finally, I suggest the updating procedure to be: Procedure ======== 1) Instrument Scientist notifies JPr and lsarchiv@eso.org of the existance of a new IP specifying the exact version and date of the package (e.g. FEROS-118.07-20040928.zip) and that it exists in the IP repository on EPU. 2) LS-Archive uploads the new IP from http://www.ls.eso.org/lasilla/sciops/esoonly/ip/ and incorporates it into the default DRL user configuration setup files. Simple really. Maintenance plan, i.e. WHEN to apply above procedure: ============================================= As noted above by Anton IPs should only need to be updated: 1. At the change of period 2. VLT upgrade 3. Instrument Upgrade 4. DFS upgrade as requested by DMD 5. Special Request from SciOps. In the case of 5 the need for this should be discussed with JPr (or his eventual successor) BEFORE proceding. What d'ya think??? Responsible : Software&Commun.Supp.T.
