Action Log : 7/5/01 2:43:52 PM gandreon TT should provide the names of a couple of systems (une client and one server) to be used as reference. Then, SWC will check the system configurations, the routing, and perform any other test necessary to devise a solution. If the bottleneck will be located in the router to the backbone, a purchase of a different model will be considered (if justified). 7/26/01 2:48:37 PM gihle MPA will make the study and will determine the deadline. 8/2/01 2:55:37 PM gandreon Configuration of router's interfaces have been modified. More actions to come. 8/9/01 4:48:29 PM gandreon Investigation to be extended to data storage systems. 8/23/01 12:53:18 PM fgutierr Tests over switch configuration were done during 18,19 August 2001. No improvement was observed with manual set up of parameters. The speed from wlsdbs and wg5off was the same as before. Fast (~5000 Kbytes/sec up) slow down (~800Kbytes/sec). There is a need to study deeply the router configuration. It is observed some speed increase after resetting all network devices. The Cisco 2600 router was put back again at the ESO 3.6 8/23/01 3:43:19 PM gandreon Investigation so far has singled out two anomalies: 1. When network equipments are resetted, performances are nominal, but after a while they degrade without apparent reason. 2. Different throughputs have be measured on the same path for traffic in the opposite directions. Again, this is unreasonable. Investigation and tests will continue. 8/30/01 6:46:16 PM gandreon Delayed by Marcus accident. 10/4/01 5:12:39 PM gihle After Gaetano´s holidays and together with Marcus it will be checked 10/25/01 1:37:51 PM gandreon The final step is bring to LSO a Cisco consultant who should either improve the situation or suggest a replacement. It will be done asap. 11/15/01 2:14:19 PM gandreon This turno either we should get the consultant, or an order for a replacement router should be placed. In the latter case the location of the new control room should be considered. 11/22/01 2:28:13 PM gandreon Year end is getting closer and this point is getting more urgent because now is also linked to the new control building. Here is the advice of Peter Biereichel as a guideline: "Well, then I would use 'rtdb' (see IRACE-DCS - Real-Time application UM, VLT-MAN-ESO-14100-2108) which has been used already by a number of instruments (NAOS, VINCI, CONICA). 'rtdb' is a base module which interfaces to CCS and allows to add and re-arrange control widgets and menus (orinally it was build for IRACE). Maybe you can look at the document which is attached. The maximum amount of water that can be spilled is 190cc - The equipment has to pumps that allows water flows of 0.5 lt/min to 3.3 lts/min and output pressures between 1.12 to 2.2 bar - The equipment for a proper functioning needs to be pressurized to 1 bar. 6/28/01 4:19:46 PM gandreon To be tested during next test time (8-12 July) 7/12/01 3:15:35 PM gandreon The new system, which have been modified, is not currently used because not accepted yet. Action : Please install and configure the latest version of scisoft (July 2001) on drl6, w2p2off, and on the new linux reduction box for the 2p2. The current version of scisoft on drl6 is Nov. 2000. Action Log : 8/16/01 3:08:02 PM gandreon A bug has been discovered. HQ has been notified. Waiting for solution. 8/23/01 3:52:10 PM gandreon HP-Ux version has been downloaded. A bug fix was also found. Only final check missing before installation. 8/30/01 6:53:51 PM gandreon Deadline moved due to Marcus accident. 9/6/01 2:56:42 PM gandreon To be done during this turno. 9/13/01 3:09:54 PM gandreon There is a conflict with VLT software. Solutions will be proposed. To be fixed ESO wide. 9/27/01 2:51:21 PM gandreon Fernando will test the pilot installation. 10/18/01 2:41:25 PM gandreon To be distributed this week. 10/25/01 1:56:37 PM gandreon New scisoft has been installed on drls and offline systems as requested. For specific systems, cooperation of the astronomer in charge is requested. 11/15/01 2:18:05 PM gandreon IRAF reportedly is misbehaving at NTT. Possibly due to configuration mistake. 11/22/01 2:35:56 PM gandreon It seems that Midas, and not Iraf, is the offending software. It will be takled this turno 11/29/01 1:39:56 PM gandreon Garching support is required. To be contacted by SWC asap. Responsible : Software&Commun.Supp.T. Action : After a Problem Request from NTT, Anton investigated the situation of P2PP,here is the report: 11/15/01 11:29:25 aschemrl During my Nov8-15 turno, the analysis of the problem showed the implementation and configuration of jp2pp is a MESS! There are 3p6 users running NTT configurations, which in turn are running WFI jre's. It is obvious that under these conditions a more restrictive solution would take longer to implement on kila, and may not be the ideal solution. This is not an NTT problem, it affects all visiting and local astronomers. A suggestion will be made to create a jp2pp template that will be applied at the time of lsusr account creation. This means running jp2pp on Linux machines that connect to the drl9 server. This will avoid configuration interferences and single user responsibility. This means that jp2pp would be removed from kila. Aproval of this proposal will remain pending until there is a global La Silla agreement among astronomers. Action Log : 11/22/01 2:37:39 PM gandreon It looks like a good idea. However, his implementation requires a configuration change of Kila & offline systems. To be approved by LSO Management. These are not automatically communicated to the telescope team. I (oli) contacted USG; their response is being forwarded to SWC by email. The action requested is to implement and configure the script they sent. I suggest its generalization to all telescopes. Action Log : Responsible : Software&Commun.Supp.T.
