Action Log : 07/05/01 3:43:52 PM gandreon TT should provide the names of a couple of systems (une client and one server) to be used as reference. Then, SWC will check the system configurations, the routing, and perform any other test necessary to devise a solution. If the bottleneck will be located in the router to the backbone, a purchase of a different model will be considered (if justified). 07/26/01 3:48:37 PM gihle MPA will make the study and will determine the deadline. 08/02/01 3:55:37 PM gandreon Configuration of router's interfaces have been modified. More actions to come. 08/09/01 5:48:29 PM gandreon Investigation to be extended to data storage systems. 08/23/01 1:53:18 PM fgutierr Tests over switch configuration were done during 18,19 August 2001. No improvement was observed with manual set up of parameters. The speed from wlsdbs and wg5off was the same as before. Fast (~5000 Kbytes/sec up) slow down (~800Kbytes/sec). There is a need to study deeply the router configuration. It is observed some speed increase after resetting all network devices. The Cisco 2600 router was put back again at the ESO 3.6 08/23/01 4:43:19 PM gandreon Investigation so far has singled out two anomalies: 1. When network equipments are resetted, performances are nominal, but after a while they degrade without apparent reason. 2. Different throughputs have be measured on the same path for traffic in the opposite directions. Again, this is unreasonable. Investigation and tests will continue. 08/30/01 7:46:16 PM gandreon Delayed by Marcus accident. 10/04/01 6:12:39 PM gihle After Gaetano´s holidays and together with Marcus it will be checked 10/25/01 2:37:51 PM gandreon The final step is bring to LSO a Cisco consultant who should either improve the situation or suggest a replacement. However, the existing valve of a cooler that is not used was removed and installed in the 3.6m cooler. This together with a calibrated presostat that cut the system to prevent water flow were tested. The actual equipment will have the following characteristics : - In case that the circuit is obstructed, due to a non connected connector the valve will deviate the flow in bypass, preventing any possibility of a broken line or connection. - If a line is cut the presostat will cut the system. The maximum amount of water that can be spilled is 190cc - The equipment has to pumps that allows water flows of 0.5 lt/min to 3.3 lts/min and output pressures between 1.12 to 2.2 bar - The equipment for a proper functioning needs to be pressurized to 1 bar. 06/28/01 5:19:46 PM gandreon To be tested during next test time (8-12 July) 07/12/01 4:15:35 PM gandreon The new system, which have been modified, is not currently used because not accepted yet. Action : As discussed in the last LSMM (29 June), we would like to know the resources and time-scales involved to install a simple (manual!) rotation of the Grism (0 degrees and 90 degrees) with WFI at the 2p2. This modification might also possibly involve ISG and the Electronic Teams. Action Log : 07/05/01 3:46:46 PM gandreon There are design considerations to be clarified before this point can be assigned. It seems that the grism cannot be rotated without loosing the guiding capability. 07/12/01 4:20:17 PM gandreon The only solution is the rotation of the complete instrument. 07/22/01 10:43:00 AM gihle During the 2.2m upgrade the possibility to rotate the instrument was discussed and a project developed. The designed unit is installed, however the instrument arrived with an extra spacer flange that required to remove the main rotating drive gear from the telescope´s rotator. To re-activate the unit (it has a motor and encoder), we will need to make a small modification to the instrument´s extra spacer flange. To modify this spacer the instrument needs to be lowered and be out of the telescope for at least 2 nights. 08/02/01 4:32:05 PM gandreon TT: please define dates. 08/09/01 5:52:58 PM gandreon Test time available starting September 28th. This was a part of the upgrade performed a few years ago. The position is available in the control system. I don't know if the user software allows access to this information, but if it doesn't yet, then software people should be able to implement this. From the hardware side, the existing system is exactly the same as the absolute encoders for alpha, delta and focus. An additional position display for the dome room was also made at that time, but this display was not in place, but was instead stored downstairs. Only the alpha and delta displays were in place in the dome console. If I remember right, the rotator display had not been installed, or been removed, to make room for the WFI installation. This display has now been (re)installed under the mirror and is operational. From talking to several people (RME, DGO, GIH) I understand that at this time it is not required to implement actual control over the rotator, but that only the position information was requested. At this time the rotator does not have any motorization. So, if eventually a motorized motion is required, this would be a "joint venture" of mechanics and electronics. 10/18/01 3:32:39 PM gandreon It will be finished by the Telescope Team electronics. The x-term solution did not work. We request that the data traffic handling responsibility, and the observation handling responsibilty (p2pp and OT) be separated in two machines w2p2dhs and w2p2ot. The WFI instrument is unique in its heavy data load and thus it needs a unique solution to bring the nightly efficiency to acceptable levels. The w2p2dhs machine, once separated, does not need to have a monitor present at the control room. The x-term should be kept as a netscape machine for the visiting astronomers (FSE). Right now these rather big openings are sealed with cardboard which is falling apart. Action : All clocks (UT,ST, online computers clocks) should be synchronized. Action Log : 09/06/01 3:55:56 PM gandreon Now they look syncronized. Manfred will check the discrepancy between the atomic clock and GPS. 10/18/01 3:38:57 PM gandreon MMO wrote: I checked the offset between GPS-derived UT time and our atomic clock today, which is about 2 months after reinstallation of the atomic clock. Our clock is 155ms ahead of GPS time, with a short-term jitter of about 20us and what seems to be a drift of roughly 0.1ms/h. Assuming that the synchronization at reinstallation time was correct, this would mean a long term drift of roughly 2.6ms/day, which agrees with the directly observed drift. This is better than typical quartz clock accuracy, and a lot better than what we had with our backup quartz while the atomic clock was out of service, but several orders of magnitude worse than what an atomic clock in good shape would produce. I will keep checking the offset in order to determine if the drift is constant. Maybe it is possible to tune out some of it over time, but this is doubtful. It's impossible to tell how much of the jitter is due to the GPS, but probably most of it comes from our clock, which has exceeded the lifetime recommended by the manufacturer by no less than 450%. The aged beam tube produces a very low signal, with large amounts of noise, which explains the jitter and drift. It does not seem feasible to improve the jitter, unless the Caesium beam tube is replaced (DM52000). The best we can do is trying to reduce the drift, and resynchronizing the atomic clock whenever the offset becomes unacceptable. To do this we need to physically transport it to some place where GPS signal is available, or we would need mayor cabling work to bring a GPS signal to the Atomic Clock room. The Sidereal time was calculated two months ago according to observed earth rotation data for 1992, and for a longitude that is about the center of La Silla. If someone can provide fresher earth rotation data, I could improve the accuracy of the sidereal time distribution. Anyway, it does not look particularly important, since the geographic spread of La Silla accounts for several seconds of difference in ST between different telescopes, so we cannot distribute an accurate ST for each telescope. The ST is subject to the same drift and jitter as the UT. 10/18/01 3:40:11 PM gandreon A maintenance task for the clock resyncronization should be added, with a periodicity of three months.
