As was present with the old Long Camera a tube is required that contains the camera mirror and extends beyond the folding mirror to baffle light. It needs to have a provision for easy access to the Hartmann mask such as a slidable door, or equivalent. Action Log : January 13, 2000 1:26:57 PM gandreon More analisys is required. Tube may not be the best solution and it will be an heavy job. Currently the main source of parassitic light seems to have been cut (all LEDs off in Fiera). February 03, 2000 3:43:18 PM gandreon Tests performed by R Tighe were satisfactory. To be confirmed by Martin. February 10, 2000 4:22:45 PM gandreon A temporary solution has reduced parassitic light by a factor of 9. Therefore a permanent one should be devised. Deadline to be negotiated. March 02, 2000 1:51:58 PM gandreon Proposal is for end of April. March 09, 2000 3:26:07 PM gandreon Design ready. To be approved by Martin Kuster. March 16, 2000 2:08:31 PM gandreon One source of light has been descovered and eliminated shoielding the fiber carrying data to/from Fiera. Action on hold unitl confirmed by Martin that now there is no more parassitic light. (The room is needed for setting up the MOS facility). Action Log : January 13, 2000 1:28:16 PM gandreon To be studied by ELC, in relation to existing projects on the same matter. March 03, 2000 9:22:58 AM dgojak According the SEST people informations, the CERME clock's used by them are just one display more in the control room which may be removed. Which means that CESIUM clock distribution may be intercepted at the exTRS building level and move the clock generator to ELC if required, leaving the SEST segment inactive. May 26, 2000 7:18:40 PM dgojak The CESIUM clock cell lifetime expired years ago, we don't know if we touch the clock and it stops, if it would be able to restart again. For this reason, ELC started a project building low cost GPS-driven clocks for the telescopes that still use this signal source. Once we have this alternative, and we reeplace the existent CEREME clock-displays, we will be completely independent of the old CESIUM clock. There is a second ELC project for a upgrade the CESIUM clock with a TIM-BUS protocol, this has the advantage of a second source for the NTT, at the moment there is a transmission protocol incompatibility between the different systems (IRIGB, MANCHESTER & TIM-BUS). June 01, 2000 4:03:58 PM gandreon The alternatives will be reviewed. DGO will organizing the meeting of the panel. June 12, 2000 2:55:01 PM dgojak Based on a flash meeting for review the ELC project, it was decided to build a prototype sidereal time-display with deadline 30/06/00. June 22, 2000 8:32:42 AM gihle The problem is related to the motor that activates the slit and the the actual rubber seal. As the slit is closed, the seal acts as a spring and force the slit to open. Action : An overhaul is needed. Action Log : March 23, 2000 11:26:22 AM dgojak There are two problems. the first, related to the power control, was solved by MMO and is under test. The second is related to a high current lack (~80 Amps) which activates the overcurrent protection that turns the system into inoperative. The originn of this problem could not certainly be detected yet, due to that we are checking and discarding one by one the different components involved in the circuit. March 23, 2000 5:05:12 PM mmornhin The current leak was traced to the filament selector switch, a large pneumatic device. The problem appears mostly with filament #3. Checking this switch requires disassembling much of the plant. Leo will do this next turno. Up to now, 4 different things have been done to the controller: 1) Repair of the meter's moving coil. As the feedback goes through the meter (!), this failure had opened the feedback loop, leading to the destruction of several components, which were replaced. 2) Design modification to provide proper overcurrent protection. The original circuit was nonfunctional because of misdesign (not taking into account normal component tolerances). 3) Addition of a simple filter to improve transient tolerance by the SCRs. 4) Increase of the dead-time in the phase control circuit, to prevent false firing of the SCRs. At this time the plant COULD be used, by skipping filament #3, but it's better not to do so until the selector switch has been repaired. Using it in the present condition may cause further damage. April 06, 2000 3:36:41 PM gandreon Reassigned to criogenics. April 13, 2000 4:37:59 PM gihle The unit was disassembled and found that one tiristor was damaged. The tiristor was order by Electronic team and the delivery time is expected in 15 days. The solution is in hands of Electronic Team, so it should be re-assigned to the ELC team. May 04, 2000 5:25:06 PM gandreon Reassigned tol ELC. Deadline will be assigned when the device arrives to the mountain. June 03, 2000 6:03:13 PM mmornhin The thiristors arrived, and were installed today. Believe it or not, finally IT WORKS!!! Note for the technically interested: The high current leak was caused by transformer saturation, when ONE (and only one) thriristor triggered itself, causing DC current in the transformer primary. I think we can consider this problem finally solved. Action : A solution should be devised and implemented. Action Log : May 25, 2000 4:05:33 PM gandreon The firm who delivered the antenna has been contacted. May 30, 2000 10:14:15 AM dgojak Evaluating different alternatives, its complexity vs. reliability, ELC proposes a remote control for the heating system that could be activated via modem by an operator. June 01, 2000 4:23:04 PM gandreon A system which does not rely on human intervention is required. Possible combination of sensors (temperature + humidity) should be also investigated. June 03, 2000 6:23:23 PM mmornhin Detecting snow based on temperature-humidity from the meteo station is out of the question. There is very little relationship between these parameters and actual snowfall. Ideas proposed so far include : - a shovel-like device that weighs accumulated snow (unsuitable in my opinion because we need to detect snow as soon as it begins to fall, not when it has accumulated in large amount); - a load cell at the antenna post, to sense weight increase of the antenna (would require machining mechanical parts, developing electronics, and the load cell would need a very high resolution. Additionally there is the problem of filtering out wind loading); - some kind of infrared detector on the antenna (it would be problematic to filter out daylight, it may cause IR light pollution, and the system may need fine tuning during several snowfall events. Such a sensor may also confuse snow with bird droppings); - capacitive sensor strips across the antenna (would require considerable development work); - placing a hood around the existing snow detector, to aid in snow collection (may improve things, but I would not guarantee it); - Using just the ambient temperature to control the heaters (would work well in most cases, but would waste energy during cold weather without any snow, and would not melt off accumulated snow once the ambien temperature goes up). So far I don't see a safe and elegant solution for automatic operation of the heaters, and neither does the antenna manufacturer see one. Any bright idea would be warmly welcome. The requirement are: 1) Switch on as soon as actual snowfall or icing starts 2) Switch off when the snow has been completely molten off the antenna 3) Do not switch on when there is no snow. Just a curious note: Two days ago, when we had low temperature and intense dewing, the snow detector saw H2O, the temperature sensor saw low temperature, and the heaters switched on. They were running at full duty cycle when I passed by the antenna on my way to breakfast on that cold and wet but sunny and snowless morning... June 08, 2000 4:16:29 PM gandreon Since detector proved to work fine when weather is not windy, a hood should be placed arount it (as in fifth suggestion) to ensure snow collection.
