The electronic tube protection shall be ready for middle February. January 13, 2000 1:23:42 PM gandreon Prototype will be installed and calibrated during the set-up night. February 17, 2000 1:31:20 PM gandreon Probelms with the shutter prevented the device from being tested. March 02, 2000 1:49:20 PM gandreon Burn out of shuttters is being investigated by Domingo. March 03, 2000 9:11:49 AM dgojak During prototype performance tests the shutter coil burned out. Since different individuals are involucrated, the reason is unclear yet because according preliminary informations the 'OPEN' coil is the one that burned, meanwhile the prototype has control over the 'CLOSE' coil only. The shutter type used has two inependent coils. March 09, 2000 3:24:07 PM gandreon The reason for the shutter damge has been fount. Waiting for the new coil to arrive. March 23, 2000 11:28:29 AM dgojak Still waiting for the spare shutter coils. April 06, 2000 3:28:00 PM gandreon Shutter's coils have arrived. April 15, 2000 11:39:46 AM dgojak Since March 30 A. As was present with the old Long Camera a tube is required that contains the camera mirror and extends beyond the folding mirror to baffle light. It needs to have a provision for easy access to the Hartmann mask such as a slidable door, or equivalent. Action Log : January 13, 2000 1:26:57 PM gandreon More analisys is required. Tube may not be the best solution and it will be an heavy job. Currently the main source of parassitic light seems to have been cut (all LEDs off in Fiera). February 03, 2000 3:43:18 PM gandreon Tests performed by R Tighe were satisfactory. To be confirmed by Martin. February 10, 2000 4:22:45 PM gandreon A temporary solution has reduced parassitic light by a factor of 9. Therefore a permanent one should be devised. Deadline to be negotiated. March 02, 2000 1:51:58 PM gandreon Proposal is for end of April. March 09, 2000 3:26:07 PM gandreon Design ready. To be approved by Martin Kuster. March 16, 2000 2:08:31 PM gandreon One source of light has been descovered and eliminated shoielding the fiber carrying data to/from Fiera. Action on hold unitl confirmed by Martin that now there is no more parassitic light. (The room is needed for setting up the MOS facility). Action Log : January 13, 2000 1:28:16 PM gandreon To be studied by ELC, in relation to existing projects on the same matter. March 03, 2000 9:22:58 AM dgojak According the SEST people informations, the CERME clock's used by them are just one display more in the control room which may be removed. Which means that CESIUM clock distribution may be intercepted at the exTRS building level and move the clock generator to ELC if required, leaving the SEST segment inactive. Action Log : February 13, 2000 2:43:13 PM jargomed Major software changes are required (not just database values change). The solution will be extend the actual axes limits and a monitoring mechanism will be implemented on the WS code to take care of the zenith distance limit, the drawback is that it'll depend on the WS but no reliable software limit will exists when using the axis as standalone. Preliminary feasibilty and implementation tests planned for the next technical time in March. February 17, 2000 1:37:03 PM gandreon In the meantime, current alfa and delta axis limits should be given larger values, near the hardware limit. February 24, 2000 1:07:55 PM jargomed A geometric description (ellipse?) is required in the alpha/delta plane for the given zenithal distance restriction, or at least the maximun alpha and delta values in order to be able to modify temporarily the software limits. Keep in mind that the final solution is planned to be developed/tested during March tech time. It's supposed to be a very simple calculation so I request the telescope team itself to provide the numbers. Thanks. March 28, 2000 2:33:53 PM jargomed Code ready for test but on telescope telescope delayed until my next turno due to delays on the main mirror mounting. Some daytime will be needed, hopefully a couple of mornings. April 10, 2000 2:40:38 PM jargomed New deadline requested considering telescope daytime availability. April 24, 2000 3:22:39 PM jargomed Test on site done successfully, the new limits are working right now, the alpha limits were extended and a max zenitth distance of 70deg (pleisy advice) was set. To be checked is the calculation of the remainning tracking time and to be implemented a flag/light on the TCS main panel indicating that a limit violation is present. It was not possible to mount it before because of the requirement to obtain light over all three fiber inputs. Now only one fiber will be used and light could be concentrated on one single spot covering the selected fiber input. February 24, 2000 1:42:13 PM gandreon Final check has to be done during a set-up night, with a real star. March 09, 2000 8:53:49 AM agilliot Comment from Gae is irrelevant, it is a lens to concentrate calibration light and as nothing to see with real star. Alarms set points adjusted, and enabled (see previous mail on the subject). -Temperature for EFOSC FIERA rack is being logged. Today I downloaded the first 800 points begining 17/03 @ 15:31 The rack temperature as been always arround 284.5K =>11.3C EFOSC will be mounted on the telescope on the 22th (I think). Monday next turno I will download again the info (log RAM last ~9.3 days). April 10, 2000 12:19:42 PM nhaddad The system has been under monitoring for more than a week without a failure. The temperature on the FIERA rack was around 16C, reaching a maximum of 19C the 9 and 10 of April. I recommend to CLOSE this action point. Nevertheless a check to the cooling system (heat exchanger) has to be performed (Wendegas?) to lower the coolant incoming temperature to compensate for the 3C of temperature rise during the last 2 days . April 15, 2000 12:14:37 PM psinclai closed after no more problemas detected. The temperature is stable now and the MEC team has agreed to improve the reliability of the cooling water connectors, to avoid accidental disconnections. April 15, 2000 12:18:32 PM psinclai who can close this? I can't close it, Remedy rejects my change to completed, or to assign it back to CFT... I leave it like this... and assume it is closed. Action Log : November 04, 1999 1:29:11 PM gandreon Should be done during Feros time ( November 9 to 24). Possibly finished a couple of days in advance (22/11). November 18, 1999 1:37:14 PM gandreon It will not be finished in time. The foreseen maintenance should be done during daytime. January 13, 2000 1:45:01 PM gandreon To be delired this turno. February 03, 2000 3:45:44 PM gandreon Test to be carried out between February 14 and 18. February 17, 2000 1:41:41 PM gandreon Nothing was done. February 24, 2000 1:46:10 PM gandreon Next window is between March 13 and 20. March 09, 2000 3:30:29 PM gandreon Temporarely reassigned to LIN. March 16, 2000 7:51:38 AM agilliot This operation is not as simple as it seems. The slit unit removal and replacement with a new support requires to ensure the correct alignment of the fiber head with the telescope. This is needed only the first time we will use the new support. The slit unit removal was foreseen on the 16 of March to perform the maintenance as scheduled during the 16 and 17 morning with a slit reinstall on the 17 after lunch. But as described above this new support first installation requires access on the Feros room to back illuminate the fiber in way to orientate the fiber head with the laser beam shinning the M2 mirror. At that time we cannot 100% guarantee the stabilisation in temperature of the instrument at the beginning of the night. Observers working at the performance edge of Feros did not accept this operation, prefering a full stable Feros. The operation had to be postponed once more ! The new support installation must be done before a test night to check thermal instability and at Feros run start. LIN will arrange staff presence to perform the operation. March 21, 2000 5:33:46 PM jroucher PLEASE record the fact that this action is not anymore critical for observations March 23, 2000 3:15:24 PM gandreon To be done between 24 and 27/April. April 06, 2000 3:34:12 PM gandreon Alain will be here. April 13, 2000 11:02:28 AM jroucher Take chance of the 1m52 aluminization period, the maintenance operation on the slit unit could be done at that time April 27, 2000 9:33:46 AM agilliot Maintenance on slit unit has been done, all moving parts (jaws) are now in contact with teflon pads. One guiding ball was missing on the slit. Only remain the calibration width/encoder units to be done today or at the lattest tomorrow. Action : An overhaul is needed. Action Log : March 23, 2000 11:26:22 AM dgojak There are two problems. the first, related to the power control, was solved by MMO and is under test. The second is related to a high current lack (~80 Amps) which activates the overcurrent protection that turns the system into inoperative. The originn of this problem could not certainly be detected yet, due to that we are checking and discarding one by one the different components involved in the circuit. March 23, 2000 5:05:12 PM mmornhin The current leak was traced to the filament selector switch, a large pneumatic device. The problem appears mostly with filament #3. Checking this switch requires disassembling much of the plant. Leo will do this next turno. Up to now, 4 different things have been done to the controller: 1) Repair of the meter's moving coil. As the feedback goes through the meter (!), this failure had opened the feedback loop, leading to the destruction of several components, which were replaced. 2) Design modification to provide proper overcurrent protection. The original circuit was nonfunctional because of misdesign (not taking into account normal component tolerances). 3) Addition of a simple filter to improve transient tolerance by the SCRs. 4) Increase of the dead-time in the phase control circuit, to prevent false firing of the SCRs. At this time the plant COULD be used, by skipping filament #3, but it's better not to do so until the selector switch has been repaired. Using it in the present condition may cause further damage. April 06, 2000 3:36:41 PM gandreon Reassigned to criogenics. April 13, 2000 4:37:59 PM gihle The unit was disassembled and found that one tiristor was damaged. The tiristor was order by Electronic team and the delivery time is expected in 15 days. The solution is in hands of Electronic Team, so it should be re-assigned to the ELC team. Action : 1) Heating system of the antena is connected but not working. Need to be repaired. 2) Gound connection need to be on regular maintenance. Flavio Gutierrez SWC Action Log : April 06, 2000 3:38:43 PM gandreon Manfred has the plans. April 07, 2000 6:06:35 PM mmornhin The system had been improperly connected, fortunately without causing major damage. It has been reconnected now in the correct way. In addition, two other problems in the system were found and corrected: - A loose connection inside the controller. It was fixed. - The feed assembly heater was disconnected, its cable hanging loose, making short circuit, and this had caused a fuse to blow. The cable was reconnected, the fuse replaced. The entire system was checked out, confirming operation of the ice sensor, all individual heaters, and the control function. The ambient temperature interlock had to be bridged for these tests (as outlined in the manual), so it would be desirable to check its proper operation someday when the temperature is near freezing. The necessary test is simply checking that the "ambient temperature" LED on the controller lights when the temperature is low. The ground connection seems to be OK, at least the water is flowing. Periodic checkups would be a good idea. I returned the documentation to the equipment room, but some binders seem to be missing. If someone has them in his office, please return them!
