The first problem usually manifests itself in just one random sensor value permanently pegged at a high level, and seems to be caused by latchup of an operational amplifier, apparently by transients from the oil system switchon. This latchup can be cleared by power-cycling the VME rack. The other problem manifests itself in individual sensors reading wrong values at random times, without any clear reproducible pattern. This problem seems to be related to the accessing of the A/D card multiplexer. We are trying different ways to do the multiplexer access, in order to find one that's not susceptible to this problem. In laboratory tests it has not been possible to reproduce any of these problems, even after 328000 conversions, so the problem is clearly related to something specific to the telescope. It will be installed during Jaime's next turno, that is between 26/11 and 2/12 (he has taken one turno off). December 02, 1999 2:48:39 PM mmornhin Problem is SOLVED, or at least so we hope! There were THREE different problems, each causing intermittent wrong values. This explains why it took so long to understand and fix it. The problems were: 1) Occassional latchup of operational amplifiers in the sensor conditioner board. When this happened, some sensor would give a stable, very high reading, and stay there until the VME was power cycled. According to the manufacturer of the chips, these operational amplifiers provide "guaranteed latchup-free operation". So much for that. The chips were replaced by some from a different manufacturer, and additional latchup protection circuitry was installed. 2) Random memory incrementing from the ADC board. This manifested itself in sudden wrong values for individual sensors, without any reproducible pattern. The problem was caused by an undocumented "feature" of the Burr-Brown ADC boards: They require defining their memory space as a certain type of variable in the program! Jaime grew some white hairs before finding this out. The low-level software was modified accordingly. 3) Clipping of values by the ADC board. This problem manifested itself in specific sensors showing fixed values, typically 50% humidity or 30 degrees temperature. It was caused by marginal ADC boards, which were temperature sensitive! We tried 6 of them. Only one of the six works well even when cold, another one works well at temperatures above about 15 degrees, so it's OK in the lab but not in the telescope... The other four boards work correctly only above about 25 or 30 degrees! Having only one good board, we installed this one in the 2p2. For the 1.54, we "fixed" a board by installing a small heater (0.4 Watt) on the chip that causes the problem. This is not a beautiful solution, we know this, but now the board works perfectly well. The heater was installed in such a way that it should provide long-time trouble free service, but anyway we will try to find replacement chips that work well even when cold, and then remove that heater.
