Action : They need an overhaul. It should be carried out during next idle time. Action Log : 12/01/97 17:24:39 agilliot The CES general Overhaul is already planified for next year before the installation of the very long camera. The dismounting of the entrance slit will require a complete re-calibration of the jaw position as well as a new golbal instrument-telescope alignment check. It is a time consuming operation not scheduled for us. No opticians will be present during the next idle time end of december. According last week status , the slit failures occured only on remote control mode ? Day time test on local mode didn't shown slit mis-positionning (a week ago) What is the last status ? (I should remember the procedure to open an action point, after agreement between the involved teams...) 12/02/97 14:47:26 gandreon Note from GAN: teams should care about attending the Tuesday meeting. Anyway, the deadline was not assigned because no member from Optics was present. 12/09/97 15:13:29 gandreon More troubles with the unit have been reported by the Telescope Team. It may become an urgent problem, therefore a proposal from Optics is expected. 12/15/97 18:01:26 agilliot Because no opticians will be present on the mountain on the coming idle time a solution is possible now: - exchange of the entrance slit unit by a old scanner intermediate slit. - calibration and alignment of the slit with the CES alignment laser. This will be a temporary solving until the April Overhaul. 12/16/97 17:28:54 gandreon Waiting decision from astronomer. 12/19/97 08:03:07 agilliot Decision from astronomer was against any change on the instrument during the run. The slit exchange will be then foreseen during a setup day after the 5 of january 98 02/01/98 11:46:59 rtighe 30/01/98 RT During this setup day the predisp. entrance slit unit was checked (the motor is a bit harder to turn than e.g. the decker but not abnormaly hard). The CES scanner mode slits (2) were dismounted. Both units were tested connecting them to the predisp. entrance slit cable. Apparently, they work though they wouldn't initialize right away, but it's obvious they need to be calibrated to be used as entrance slit. None of the suggested actions on this subject were taken, because: 1rst: The description of the problem is too vague. Mechanically the slit unit was checked, and the preload screws of the jaws' sliding rails were loosened to try making the motor work lighter. But the unit is OK and though it is used every day at La Silla, it never fails (how does one repair a damage that doesn't exist?). It has only been reported to fail during remote control when commanded from Garching (and very ocasionaly). The problem looks more like loss of information during communication than an electrical or mechanical problem of the unit. 2nd: The calibration of the slit is too time consuming. It is simply not possible to do the calibration+alignment check and the setup in half a day. Moreover, given the situation mentioned above, it would be quite uncertain that the problem be solved by changing the slit unit. Yet, there is a real problem with the entrance slit. It has to be rotated arround the optical axis (tilt of spectral lines). If this is done, the unit also would have to be recalibrated. This problem could be tackled during the CES overhaul in April or during the first possible idle time, but not on a setup day. 02/10/98 16:40:54 gandreon Reaction from TT is needed at this point. 02/17/98 13:47:58 gandreon TT accepted the proposal. 02/27/98 08:43:03 agilliot After the decision on postponing the action in the April overhaul time , i suggest to close this point and eventually re-open if problems subsist after the general opto-mechanical intervention on the instrument. 04/14/98 15:57:00 gandreon Done, Now it should be monitored by the TT. Action : MULTI program should be updated. Action Log : 04/28/98 17:03:49 gandreon Dear Percy and Emilio, this is a reply to your e-mails (Percy Glaves: Apr 22) and (Emilio Barrios: Apr 25) both of which I have appended below. Thanks, Percy, for your detailed information. I really appreciate that you dug into this old program (with Emilio's help) which was very important. I do, however, have a comment with respect to Emilio's suggestion which I'd rather not accept. I my recent measurements with the new Very Long Camera at the CES I obtained a MEASURED resolving power of R = 235,000 with a 91 micron slit, well sampled with about 2.45 pixels per FWHM (Full width at half maximum) of the Thorium-Argon lines. To clarify: this was not the CALCULATED resolving power for the 91 micron slit, but a value determined in the Thorium-Argon spectra. Nikolai Piskunov got similar results. This indicates two things: 1) The conversion 50 micron <===> R = 226,800 is not correct. The TRUE value of R obtained for a 91 micron slit is already larger than the CALCULATED value of R which Emilio suggests as a limit. When we want to improve the relation between R and slit width this limit should not cause additional problems. 2) There is a good chance that with a slit narrower than 90 microns we might increase this value of the resolving power even more. If we are not limited by image quality or instrument vibrations we might be able to approach R=285,000 at the 2-pixel sampling limit for slit widths of 0.74 microns (or smaller). I understand that we must have a limit to avoid a slit narrower than 50 microns. But this limit should no be applied as a limit of the maximum value of the resolving power. The reasons are: 1) We already achieve R higher than 226,800 with a 91 micron slit. Therefore, we will need to update this conversion. 3) If we can go higher with an even narrower slit (which we should try), then we should enable this option and not prevent it via a limit on R. The limit should clearly be on the slit width (50 micron minimum). Please keep me informed on how you continue. Very best regards, Martin 04/28/98 17:04:38 gandreon Date: Mon, 27 Apr 1998 13:33:05 -0400 From: Emilio Barrios Hi Martin you are complete right, if the RP v/s slit width is wrong of course the 226880 is wrong. If you get the good one give it to Flavio to correct the old one and to change the maximun RP limit in the "define exposure" form and also the minimun entrance slit in the "special setting" form.
