We need an enlargement of the hole, only in the central part, of about 9-10mm in each side, with a width of about 10-20mm (no need of more). This has to be done for positions (3 to 8) in the wheel. We doesn't need a good accuracy I already talk with W. Eckert and he agree to think that the work should be done in about 1/2 day ... I will recommand the end of March as a dead line. Action : They need an overhaul. It should be carried out during next idle time. Action Log : 12/01/97 18:24:39 agilliot The CES general Overhaul is already planified for next year before the installation of the very long camera. The dismounting of the entrance slit will require a complete re-calibration of the jaw position as well as a new golbal instrument-telescope alignment check. It is a time consuming operation not scheduled for us. No opticians will be present during the next idle time end of december. According last week status , the slit failures occured only on remote control mode ? Day time test on local mode didn't shown slit mis-positionning (a week ago) What is the last status ? (I should remember the procedure to open an action point, after agreement between the involved teams...) 12/02/97 15:47:26 gandreon Note from GAN: teams should care about attending the Tuesday meeting. Anyway, the deadline was not assigned because no member from Optics was present. 12/09/97 16:13:29 gandreon More troubles with the unit have been reported by the Telescope Team. It may become an urgent problem, therefore a proposal from Optics is expected. 12/15/97 19:01:26 agilliot Because no opticians will be present on the mountain on the coming idle time a solution is possible now: - exchange of the entrance slit unit by a old scanner intermediate slit. - calibration and alignment of the slit with the CES alignment laser. This will be a temporary solving until the April Overhaul. 12/16/97 18:28:54 gandreon Waiting decision from astronomer. 12/19/97 09:03:07 agilliot Decision from astronomer was against any change on the instrument during the run. The slit exchange will be then foreseen during a setup day after the 5 of january 98 02/01/98 12:46:59 rtighe 30/01/98 RT During this setup day the predisp. entrance slit unit was checked (the motor is a bit harder to turn than e.g. the decker but not abnormaly hard). The CES scanner mode slits (2) were dismounted. Both units were tested connecting them to the predisp. entrance slit cable. Apparently, they work though they wouldn't initialize right away, but it's obvious they need to be calibrated to be used as entrance slit. None of the suggested actions on this subject were taken, because: 1rst: The description of the problem is too vague. Mechanically the slit unit was checked, and the preload screws of the jaws' sliding rails were loosened to try making the motor work lighter. But the unit is OK and though it is used every day at La Silla, it never fails (how does one repair a damage that doesn't exist?). It has only been reported to fail during remote control when commanded from Garching (and very ocasionaly). The problem looks more like loss of information during communication than an electrical or mechanical problem of the unit. 2nd: The calibration of the slit is too time consuming. It is simply not possible to do the calibration+alignment check and the setup in half a day. Moreover, given the situation mentioned above, it would be quite uncertain that the problem be solved by changing the slit unit. Yet, there is a real problem with the entrance slit. It has to be rotated arround the optical axis (tilt of spectral lines). If this is done, the unit also would have to be recalibrated. This problem could be tackled during the CES overhaul in April or during the first possible idle time, but not on a setup day. 02/10/98 17:40:54 gandreon Reaction from TT is needed at this point. 02/17/98 14:47:58 gandreon TT accepted the proposal. 02/27/98 09:43:03 agilliot After the decision on postponing the action in the April overhaul time , i suggest to close this point and eventually re-open if problems subsist after the general opto-mechanical intervention on the instrument.
