There are three types of observing time besides the regular OPC-granted time
at our telescopes:
Idle time: This has been introduced to minimize telescope operations around
full moon, and can only be used for technical work, but not for astronomical
(scientific) observations. An exception to this rule are Service Mode Operations,
but other exceptions must be channeled to the Director General via the Observatory
of La Silla.
Reserved time: This time is what remains available after the scheduling has been done, and can be used for astronomical observations. Any programs applying for this time must go through the DDT procedure (DDTC) and will finally be approved or rejected by the Director General. In very urgent cases however, DDT projects can also interrupt ongoing OPC approved programs. If within one month of the night(s) there are no DDTC proposals, the time is given to the Director of the Observatory for allocation. This might be delegated by the Director of the Observatory to the Team Leader for allocation among their staff.
Technical time: Corresponds to slots of time that have been introduced upon
request by the telescope team for special technical projects. If this time is
not totally used, it may be awarded to VA programs as compensation for technical
problems. This should happen in consultation with the Team Leader.
