At the Status & Planning meeting (Nov-25, 2002) the following schedule was agreed to: By end of Nov: LED fabricates a new FH. Dec: FH sent to Kugler, polished and returned by end of month. Early Jan: FH arrives back from Kugler, ferule and ball lens holders fabricated. This schedule was believed to be adequate to then allow the preparation and laboratory testing and installation of the new Science-Fibres in time to be installed for the February FEROS run. However it quickly became apparent that the FH could NOT be fabricated with the required prcision in the La Silla Workshop. A new design allowing the fine-tuning alignment of the components has been proposed by W.Eckert, but is yet to be reviewed due to the relevant persons being on vacation. A second possibility is that the pieces can be fabricated at Paranal using the laser punching system there. R.Tomai was at La Silla for the La Silla Wide Review (Nov 18, 2002) and this possibility was discussed with him then by G.Ihle. Detailed plans have been sent to R.Tomai and we await news regarding whether it is feasible at Paranal. Meanwhile it seems we are already unable to meet the above schedule and it is more reasonable to hope that we can install a new Head in time for the March FEROS run, but even this will be dependant on a quick turn around from Kugler, which is by no means guaranteed. For both FF & ThAr the balance is achieved via "red cutoff filters". The existing ones are apparently inappropriate and should be replaced. Better filter choices will have to be investigated and then implemented. 01/07/03 agilliot in a first approach we can use the filter from caspec and see the result during the set up day/night. For the Science fibres this should be done in conjunction with the new FibreHead. For the calibration fibres the timing is less critical and it can probably be done on a as soon as possible basis. For the new Science Fibres it is necessary to prepare both ends: i) The Fibre Head ii) The Fibre Exit Unit Both of these jobs are critical and delicate. "Plenty" of time should be allocated for their completion. Once the New fibre head is ready the Science Fibres can be immediately prepared. Once that is ready installation of the fibres into the Fibre Exit Unit should be begun immediately after the completion of a FEROS run so as to make maximal use of the available preiods when FEROS is not in service: 20/01 --> 23/01 [ 3n] Technical Time 23/01 --> 08/02 [16n] WFI 26/02 --> 11/03 [13n] WFI 25/03 --> ??/?? [>7n] WFI The efficiency of the new FH/New-ScienceFibres connection should be compared in the lab with that of the existing combination. 01/07/03 agilliot both science and calibration fibers are now on the mountain. We can install the calibration when we want. The science fiber are as you say related to the fiber head. So we need to review the fiber head pb asap with wec and gan... Responsible : A.Gilliotte Status : Assigned Deadline : 01/10/03 Deadline Status : Assigned ------------------------------------------------------------------------- AINumber : 044 Short Description : Revert back to Small TCCD Action Required : Re-install a Small Format TCCD Log: 12/22/02 jpritcha It is necessary to revert back to a Small Format TCCD for the fibre head viewer. Replacing the TCCD is fairly straight forward, but due to changes in the mechanical design plus the fact that even before the the two fibres only just fit onto the small Fibrehead a new lens must be installed into the adapter. This lens must be purchased new as AGi does not have any appropriate lenses in stock. PR has been signed (by JPr, OHA & GAN) and passed to O.Oreggo (on 18/12/2002) for processing. 01/07/03 agilliot waiting for the lens..... Responsible : A.Gilliotte Status : Assigned Deadline : 01/10/03 Deadline Status : Assigned ------------------------------------------------------------------------- AINumber : 045 Short Description : Improve FCU flux levels Action Required : Make the lamps (esp. ThAr) brighter Log: 12/22/02 jpritcha Lamp flux levels are too low -- 100-300sec for ThAr. This is especially a problem for programs wanting very short exposures in OC mode. Since the lamps are already powered at their recomended maximum operations V/I a new design, e.g. one lamp per calibration, fibre should be considered to improve the flux. 01/07/03 agilliot Test have to be done with the Harps lamps .... offline with Feros adapter mounted.... PR for blank signed (by JPr, OHA & GAN) and passed to O.Oreggo (on 18/12/2002) for processing. 01/07/03 agilliot mirror ordered, coating specification obtained from Andrea.... we will have to wait the mirror availability (from US) and then order the coating to Balzers. I assume a two month more delay. In addition the WFI baffling must be reinstalled on the 01/10/03 (as per request of R.Mendez in LS Action Item). Operationally it is probably best if the FEROS/WFI adapter is installed at the same time. 01/07/03 jpritcha Scheduled for Jan 10th at same time as WFI sky baffling.
