To: La Silla HiRes IFO , "2.2 Telescope" , Subject: Summary of Mar FEROS Period: Part I Dear All, Please find below summary of the March FEROS Period to date as I leave La Silla tomorrow, leaving Thomas Dall to finish the last nights. The efficiency was slightly improved (was 12%, now 13%). An important aspect was that we realised the Ball Lens with the wrong focal ration and the Focal Ratio Degradation of the fibres caused by stress on the fibres is significant and must be corrected (hense FEROS FibreHead Service Mission (Number 2). 2) Once again, FEROS and the adpater have thus far performed faultlessly, although again it was necessary to establish a new initial guess (differing even from that of Feb) due to change in the cross order profile. We must track down the source of these changes, my suspicion is shocks when re-installing the enclosure panels before and after inserting/removing the beta light for CCD Tests. 3) Statisitics to date: Bad Weather: 0.00hr Technical Downtime(*): 0.00hr Night by night stats: date # Mean ExpT Shutter LoN Eff ================ == ============ ========== ===== ====== 2003-03-11.stats 29 943.207175s 7.598058h 9.49h 0.8008 2003-03-12.stats 54 482.677332s 7.240160h 9.52h 0.7605 2003-03-13.stats 46 494.019474s 6.312471h 9.55h 0.6608 2003-03-14.stats 34 767.058827s 7.244444h 9.58h 0.7559 === Technical Nights 2003-03-18.stats 29 936.608553s 7.544902h 9.71h 0.7771 #: Number of exposures during the night. Above statistics NOT adjusted for Technical Downtime or Bad Weather. 4) Problems experienced: The only problem experienced has been the failure of WFI guiding which has happened twice. This is no problem for FEROS since once can continue with manual guiding on the TCCD. Look forward to Part II by Thomas in a week or so.
